Yes the title speaks to photography and this was originally delivered as a commencement speech for a photography school…however it holds incredible wisdom for any creative or entrepreneurial endeavour
The point is that your art/work will likely look fairly similar to the work of those you admire/other people in your field for the first few years. You are experimenting and discovering who you are and refining your style. It is only after you have built up a body of work you begin to find the gaps and the truly authentic, unique part of what you offer. The separation between your work and the work of others in your field becomes more pronounced over time. This is where the magic happens.
“It’s the separation that makes all the difference, and once you start to see that difference in your work from the work you so admire (that’s why you chose that platform after all), it’s time to look for your breakthrough.
Suddenly your work starts to get noticed. Now you are working more on your own, making more of the difference between your work and what influenced it.”
But in order to get there you have to stay on your particular path, you have to put in the groundwork, the reworking, the repetition in order to get to the point where you can have a breakthrough.
In this way you get a feel of the whole creative process, you get to see the progression of your whole journey. If you keep stopping and restarting every few years you will continuously end up at the starting line and never fully accomplishing what you set out to do.
So choose your path and stay on it. Allow it to move you forward, push through boredom, paralysis, keep creating, keep staying true to your chosen path. Allow yourself to stay committed and reap the rewards of finding mastery in your unique voice in a sea of many.
